About

Muğla Museum occupies the former prison building behind the courthouse in Menteşe, the central district of Muğla. The two-storey, rectangular building with an open courtyard opened to visitors as a museum in 1994. It has halls for natural history, ethnography, archaeology, gladiators and the Yatağan rescue excavations. The natural history hall shows fossils from the Kaklıca Hill fossil bed in Özlüce village, dating to between 5 and 9 million years ago, a period known as the Turolian. Finds include giraffids, bovids, rhinoceroses, proboscideans, horses, pigs and carnivores, together with many plant fossils. The ethnography hall presents clothing and everyday objects from different parts of the province. Key pieces in the archaeology hall come from the ancient city of Stratonikeia and the sanctuary of Lagina in Yatağan, while the gladiators hall contains seven stelae from gladiator tombs found at Stratonikeia.
