About

Marmaris Museum is housed in Marmaris Castle, which stands on a peninsula overlooking the sea in the Marmaris district of Muğla province. The earliest account of the castle comes from Herodotus of Halicarnassus. In his travelogue, the 17th-century traveller Evliya Çelebi records that it was built in 1522 on the orders of Sultan Süleyman I (Kanuni) during the Rhodes campaign and served as a military base. Large cut-stone blocks in the foundations belong to an older Hellenistic fortress, and the Ottoman building inscription remains in place. People lived inside the castle until the 1980s; after restoration it became a museum in 1991. Four of its seven enclosed rooms and the courtyard display finds from the Bronze Age to the Ottoman period, including material from Knidos in Datça, the Burgaz excavations and the Emecik sanctuary of Apollo. The garden holds altars, columns and capitals, Ottoman gravestones, cannons and cannonballs, and amphorae recovered from the sea.
