Bergama, north of İzmir, stands on the capital of the ancient kingdom of Pergamon. The site, on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2014, includes the Acropolis reached by cable car with its steep theatre, the Asklepion healing centre and the Red Basilica; the town is also known for its old bazaar and carpets.
