About

Kartaltepe Nature Park is a 93-hectare area in the Kızılcahamam district of Ankara, designated on 11 July 2011. Located 74 km from Ankara and 7.5 km from Kızılcahamam, it is reached by a road of about 2 km that branches north-east off the Ankara–İstanbul highway at kilometre 53, at the Kargasekmez locality. Lying in the transition zone between Central Anatolia and the Black Sea region, the site has a near semi-humid climate, and winter and spring rainfall feeds its lakes. Forest makes up 96 per cent of the park and aquatic ecosystems 4 per cent. Deciduous mixed oak forests, black pine and aspen forests and forest clearings form the land area; because oak leaf litter enriches the soil with organic matter, the herb flora is also diverse. Wet meadows and marshes stretch along the lake shores. Ankara crocus, iris, foxglove, bellflower, gooseberry and raspberry are among the recorded plants, and squirrels, badgers, hedgehogs, woodpeckers and nightingales can be seen. With cabins, a country restaurant, picnic areas and an open-air event space, the park allows controlled use for overnight stays, walking, running and nature observation.
