About
Tekirdağ Museum is in the Süleymanpaşa district of Tekirdağ. It began in 1967 in a small exhibition room. The present building, erected in 1927 as the governor's office and later used as the governor's residence, was allocated to the Ministry of Culture in 1976, and the museum opened here on 28 December 1992. The Stone Artefacts Hall shows stelae, votive stelae and sculpture from sites such as Perinthos (Marmara Ereğlisi), Heraion (Karaevlialtı), Byzante (Barbaros) and Apri (Kermeyan), together with finds from the burial chamber of the Naip Tumulus. The archaeology hall covers the prehistoric to Byzantine periods with a mother-goddess vessel, kraters, amphorae, arrowheads and spearheads, fibulae, jewellery and coins. The ethnography section displays local costumes, bath sets, embroidery and Karacakılavuz weaving, and recreates an old Tekirdağ room. The five-terraced garden holds sarcophagi, inscriptions, columns, milestones, an Ottoman town-square fountain and a sebil, as well as a tea garden.
