About

The Alexandria Troas Archaeological Site is an ancient city at Kestanbolluk, within the boundaries of Dalyan village in the Ezine district of Çanakkale. It was founded in 310 BC as Antigoneia by Antigonos Monophthalmos, one of Alexander the Great's commanders. After Alexander's death, Lysimachos renamed it Alexandria Troas, "Alexander's city in the Troad". The city was laid out to a plan and had temples, a small bath, a stadium, a fountain, a paved street, a theatre, an aqueduct and a harbour. Among the surviving buildings, the Gymnasium of Herodes Atticus ranks among the large gymnasia of Anatolia. According to its plan the city covered some 390 hectares, and its walls can be traced for 8 km. Research has shown that it was one of the major cities of Anatolia. Excavations are carried out by Ankara University.
