About
Side Museum stands in the ancient city of Side, about 8 km from Manavgat in Antalya province, inside a former bath building opposite the Roman agora. The bath, built in the 2nd century AD and altered by additions in the 5th–6th centuries, was restored between 1959 and 1961 and converted into a museum. It is known as the first museum in Türkiye to open in a village. Most of the collection comes from the excavations carried out at Side between 1946 and 1966. Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine sculptures, portraits, relief sarcophagi, ostothecae, grave stelae, altars and amphorae are on display, along with inscriptions in Greek and in the local Sidetic language, architectural fragments, and coins of Pamphylia, Pisidia and Side. Side, whose name means "pomegranate" in the local language, was an important harbour city of Pamphylia in antiquity and was abandoned from the 12th century onwards.
