About
A late Byzantine church built between 1238 and 1263 under the Empire of Trebizond, with a cross-in-square plan and a high central dome. It became a mosque after 1461, opened as a museum in 1964 after restoration in 1958–1962, and returned to use as a mosque in 2013. Inside are late 13th-century frescoes and an opus sectile marble floor; since 2020 a retractable ceiling system lets visitors see the frescoes outside prayer times.
Curator tip
As it is in use as a mosque, visit outside prayer times.
