About

Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum stands in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, at one end of İstiklal Caddesi where Galip Dede Caddesi begins. Founded in 1491 on the slopes of Galata, the lodge was also known as the Kulekapısı Mevlevi Lodge and the Galipdede Tekke. Its buildings, probably damaged in the 1509 earthquake, were repaired in 1651; after the Tophane fire of 1765 Sultan Mustafa III had it restored, and Selim III renewed it again after Şeyh Galip became its sheikh in 1791. It took its final form in 1851–1859 under Sultan Abdülmecid. When its role as a lodge ended in 1925, the building served for a time as a primary school, then opened in 1975 as the Museum of Divan Literature and received its present name after renovation in 2008–2011. The exhibits are in the semahane: Sufi and order objects in the dervish cells on the lower floor, the walnut-floored sema area on the entrance level, and calligraphy panels and musical instruments in the upper galleries. The tombs of Şeyh Galip and Halet Efendi, the sebil-library complex and the Hamuşan cemetery can also be seen.
