About
Castle on a mound in the city centre. It began as a Roman watch post, was turned into a castle under the Byzantine emperor Justinian I in the 6th century, and was repaired under the Mamluks, the Dulkadirids and the Ottomans. Of its original 36 towers, 12 still stand. The castle was damaged in the 2023 earthquakes and the Ministry page currently lists it as closed to visitors.
