About

Multi-layered settlement about 90 km south-west of Ankara with the remains of the capital of Phrygia, an Iron Age kingdom. Highlights include an Iron Age fortified gate complex with walls standing up to 10 m, early coloured pebble mosaic floors and the 53 m high Midas Mound (Tumulus MM), whose wooden chamber of about 740 BCE is considered the oldest known standing wooden building. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.
