About

Anavarza Archaeological Site is an ancient city of Cilicia in the Kozan district of Adana, within the village of Dilekkaya and about 70 km from the provincial centre. It lies where the boundaries of the Kadirli, Ceyhan and Kozan districts meet, and ancient sources refer to it as Anazarbos, Anazarba or Anazarbus. Little is known about the city before the Roman era. After Emperor Augustus visited in 19 BC it became known as Caesarea; it was also the centre of the Kingdom of Tarkondimotos and received the title of metropolis in AD 204. The visible remains date from the Roman and Byzantine periods and include the three-arched triumphal gate known as "Alakapı", a colonnaded avenue 34 metres wide and 2,700 metres long, a theatre, an amphitheatre, temples, a council house, a bath and a necropolis. Excavations, begun in 2012, are ongoing.
